What makes this different from other Accra tours?

Most Accra tours focus on major landmarks. This experience focuses on the people, traditions and stories that have shaped one of the city’s oldest communities, offering a much more personal and authentic perspective.

Jamestown: The Historic Heart of Accra

Long before modern Accra became Ghana’s bustling capital, Jamestown was one of the region’s most important coastal settlements. Established around a British trading post in the 17th century, the area developed into a vibrant community of fishermen, traders and families whose descendants continue to live there today.

Together with neighbouring Usshertown, Jamestown formed the foundation of what would eventually become modern Accra. Its strategic coastal location made it an important centre for trade, while its fishing industry remains one of the community’s defining characteristics.

Today, Jamestown is known for its distinctive mix of history, culture and resilience. Colonial-era buildings sit alongside family compounds, colourful fishing boats line the shoreline and traditions passed down through generations continue to shape everyday life.

The neighbourhood is perhaps best recognised for its iconic lighthouse, bustling fishing harbour and annual Chale Wote Street Art Festival, which has helped introduce Jamestown’s creativity and cultural energy to an international audience.

Yet beyond the famous landmarks lies a community with a rich and complex story. The narrow alleyways, family homes, shrines, workshops and gathering places found throughout Jamestown offer visitors a glimpse into a side of Accra that many never experience.

For travellers looking to understand the city’s history, culture and people, there are few places more fascinating than Jamestown.
